SALE! omg so exciting…

some retail stores harbour so many poorly made, unethically produced garments. This diorama dissects the ideas surrounding a sale, commenting on the enchanting word. The bright lights and mirror literally represents the manipulative marketing that prompts the manic buying, which is supported and explored by consumer behaviour research in advertising. Handmade mini gloved clay hands stretching for the T-shirts are a visualisation of the desperate snatching and grabbing at a sale. The sale sign is excessively used to reiterate the intensity of this retailing environment prompting the viewer to realise the excess purchases of the same archetypes: The T-shirt. The 45 mini T-shirts are all marked, stained or torn prompting the absurdity of this consuming culture today, whilst signifying the transient nature of the linear production system. This diorama questions how by reducing the cost of a garment, decreases the value but increases its potential to be purchased regardless of the garments durability and quality.

Its the consumer! NO! its the Maker! Noooo! Its the designer!! Nah! Its the academics!

It is evidentially clear the debate around mass consumption and production and the associated impacts are at the forefront of the industry. Although there are a lot of businesses that have developed into circular systems, are transparent and are ‘sustainable’ or ethical, there is a constant finger pointing between who’s fault is what and who needs to do what in order to change. This disparity between the sectors of the fashion industry limits the ability to overcome the issues associated with the environment and inhumane production. In order for things to change, we need to unite between all sectors of the fashion industry. This diorama is a mini curated protest of this debate, showing the conversations that are currently happening in literature, and society. These conversations are over exaggerated and dry with some of the signs created humorously suggesting the ridiculousness of this finger pointing and blaming.

Mt humancrap (3)

Imagine a sign etched with “welcome to Mt Human crap”

what could it be?

Take a peep inside at the reality…the curation of Mt humancrap hopes to position the viewer (you) to question what makes waste(?), waste(?) and prompt reflection of how you can decrease one’s contribution to this mound of landfill? A mini interpretation of the destruction we are building. This diorama is created from mini garments, Coles minis and other found mini objects (all plastic of course) to further highlight the never ending mass of non-degradable objects found within a landfill site.
